7 tips for refreshing your skincare for healthy, flourishing skin!
Spring is officially here! And while I haven’t quite completed my to-do list, tending to my skincare was one of the first things I did so that my skin can flourish as the weather gets warmer.
| Shed the heavy clothing along with the dead skin and the bad skincare habits that are holding your skin back.
Here are my top tips for spring cleaning your skincare and refreshing your skin!
Toss Unused & Expired Products
Dump all products past their expiration date. Expired products are less effective and can lead to bacteria buildup and breakouts. Most skincare products will list the expiration date on the back or the bottom! Check for a specific date or the open jar symbol with a number and letter “m” representing month, i.e. 12m.
Sunscreen usually has an expiration date of two years, but if you’re using it everyday and reapplying throughout the day, your sunscreen should be done well before the expiration date. In other words, wear the sunscreen!
Your moisturizers, serums, and cleansers will be good for anywhere between six months to a year depending on if they include ingredients like an AHA or Vitamin C. Even if a product hasn’t reached its expiration date, be sure to check for changes in color, smell and texture. If you notice a change in your products it’s time to throw them away.
Start Double Cleansing
Think of double cleansing the same way you would sweeping and mopping the floor. You sweep first to pick up dust and debris, then you mop to deep clean. Double cleansing allows your skin to better absorb the serums and moisturizer you apply afterward.
To properly and effectively double cleanse you should: start with a cream or oil cleanser to breakdown oil, dirt, makeup and sunscreen that’s been on your face all day. Follow with your second cleanser for a targeted, thorough cleanse.
Commit to Using Sunscreen Daily
I can’t stress this enough – please wear sunscreen. Your skin will thank you in the long run. If you're not already using sunscreen, now is a great time to add one as the last step in your morning routine. Sunscreen helps reduce signs of aging, minimizes the appearance of dark spots and reduces your risk of skin cancer. It’s a MUST when it comes to achieving and maintaining healthy skin on your face and your body.
Invest in broad-spectrum protection and remember to wear your sunscreen year-round, even on cloudy days and reapply throughout the day.
These are some of my favorites:
Wash Your Makeup Brushes Regularly
I don’t know who needs to hear this but those makeup brushes and sponges need to be cleaned. If you’re using them everyday they accumulate oil, impurities, dust, product, dead skin cells and potentially harmful bacteria. I know it’s not the most fun thing to do and it can be time consuming if you have a lot of brushes and sponges, but you’re doing your skin a disservice if you’re using dirty brushes. Cleaning your brushes regularly will also ensure your makeup application is smoother.
You should be cleaning your brushes and sponges at least weekly and multiples times a week if you’re acne prone. Your skin will thank you for it!
Focus on Hydration
Hydrated skin is happy skin. When we talk about hydration, we’re talking about water and your skin’s ability to retain it. The skin’s protective barrier is made up of oil, sweat and water and it protects the skin from irritation and water loss. When this barrier is compromised or damaged, it leads to breakouts and dehydration. Incorporating products into your routine like hydrating toners and gel sheets masks are a great way to give your skin a much needed hydration boost for healthy, glowing complexion.
One of my personal favorite hydrating products is the IMAGE Hydrating Hydrogel Sheet Mask. It’s rich in antioxidants and hyaluronic acid, a water-seeking powerhouse, delivering instant hydration to dull, dehydrated skin. Pop this in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes before wearing as part of your nighttime routine. Follow with a moisturizer to seal in that hydration.
Your lips should not be overlooked and should get the same love and care the rest of your face gets. The skin on your lips is delicate and thin, and can easily get chapped and dried out during the winter. Treat and hydrate your lips with these staples:
Exfoliate Your Skin
It's time to exfoliate away that dead, dry, wintery layer of skin! There are two main ways you can exfoliate your skin: physically and chemically. Physical exfoliation is the process of using a textured material to slough off dead skin to reveal brighter skin underneath.
Be mindful to not over-exfoliate your skin, it can actually cause more damage than good. You can cause micro-tears, irritation, and a compromised skin barrier.
Chemical exfoliation uses fruit or plant enzymes or AHAs (glycolic, mandelic, and lactic acid) or BHAs (salicylic acid) to penetrate the skin and break down the glue that holds dead skin cells together.
Check In With Your Esthetician
Spring is the perfect time to reset, renew and refresh your home and skin. Your estie will help you navigate any changes in your skin and help you get your skin ready for the warmer months. Winter skincare tends to be heavier to protect the skin from the cold and dehydration. In the warmer months, lighter water-based products are a great way to keep your face feeling fresh and hydrated all season long.
